Pars Hyleg: What is the purpose of my life?

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?” asked Alice.
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cheshire Cat.
“I don’t much care where —” said Alice.
“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cheshire Cat.
“— so long as I get somewhere,” Alice added as an explanation.

(Lewis Carol, Alice in Wonderland)

Do you have purpose in life? Or maybe you don’t know it yet? Can Astrology give an answer to this question? One of the most fundamental questions in life: “What is the meaning and purpose of life? What is my role in it? Where is my place in this world?”

This part is the root of the others and is taken by day or night from the degree of the conjunction or prevention which preceded the nativity or the question or the revolution, to the degree of the Moon, and this is then projected from the ascendant. And  this  part is called the radix vitae (root  of  life) because  it comprehends entirely the whole being (esse) of the native or querent or even the revolution, and if it is well disposed, it signifies universally the good “being” (esse) of the native and of other matters. However, if it is evilly disposed, it signifies the contrary of the aforesaid.

(Guido Bonatti – On Arabic Parts, Zoller trans., Ch 4)

Pars Hyleg, or part of hyleg is often associated with the highest spiritual purpose one has in life.
Many suggest to use Pars Hyleg in order to find where the Life Purpose of native lies. Client may come and ask: “What is the purpose of my life?” and you can look at this part, its position by sign, house, its dispositor/s, and answer to him: “Your life path is related to that and that subject or theme (something connected with creative arts if part is in 5th for example). You can also look the planet which aspects or conjunct the part in order to see which “color” or “blend” will they add, or how easy or with hardship this purpose can be achieved (malefics in bad aspect for example).

Pars Hyleg can be found by taking the distance from the degree of the prenatal new or full moon, up to the natal Moon’s degree, and project that from Ascendant.

The formula would look like this: ASC + Natal Moon – SAN (Syzygyium Ante Nativatem).

You don’t reverse this part; it is the same for day and night births.

Jon Bon Jovi

We all know who Jon Bon Jovi is.  I don’t feel the need to present his biography, and you can easily read that on Wikipedia or any other free internet source.
Some scatch of his life can be found on astro databank where I found his chart rated with highest AA:

His Pars Hyleg is in 12 Pisces in exact conjunction with the Sun. Sun is naturally associated with fame, success, rank, glory and etc.  Sun also rules in 10th (Leo has a part of the 10th house division), so our first conclusion about this nativity would be that his purpose in life is to be famous through his career.  Sun is virtually non afflicted by malefic stars. It is peregrine but it is good that Venus gives him reception by exaltation. Venus also helps the lot because it is exalted ruler of Pisces, while the domicile lord Jupiter is in aversion to the part; exalted ruler – Venus, would take the significance of dispositor to the lot.

We can see that the lot is in Pisces, a sign which is of a dreamy and spiritual nature, watery and gives sensitivity. It is a sign which is related to music through Venus, Venus is its exalted ruler and this Venus is co-present with the Lot and Sun in this sign, and as Ascendant ruler highly accentuates the artesian nature of Jon.  This same Venus is aspecting the Midheaven in 3 degrees and in trigon relationship. We can see here very subtle relationship between his artesian nature, skills and praxis, career and fame.

Furthermore, the Sun is ruler of 11th and 7th by exaltation. We know that all that Jon made in his career, is due to his partnership (7th) with Richie Sambora (one of my favorite guitar players).
There are some astrologers who associate the 11th with the audience (through the opposition of 5th which is related to the performance). I’m not sure how justified this is from traditional astrology logic, but it makes sense to me, because one’s audience, one’s fans are his Group.
However, 7th is the house of Other People in general, so Sun has rulership here too.

His chart has some very good spear-bearers too. Moon as a Light of Sect is angular, though in bad zodiacal state has good spear-bearer – Venus (an evening rising) in her exaltation. She is just out of combustion and she assist the MC (has configuration with the MC, something which is very important).
Sun has Jupiter, Mercury and Saturn as a spear-bearers. Saturn in its own domicile, Mercury (morning star) in its own triplicity (1st triplitiy ruler of Air Signs by night), and Jupiter good enough with not being in debility or peregrine, having triplicity rulership in Aquarius. They are all in good oriental phases.

The whole chart and points in it are inter-related. You saw from the example above how one point in chart took us in examination of another point in relation to a particular theme in life.  We saw how Pars Hyleg ,can give a testimony of the purpose one has in life; in this case a famous artesian of high eminency and rank.

Paul Foster Case

Let’s look now at different nativity.
For those who are interested or have ever been interested into esoteric subjects, this name would sound familiar. Paul Foster Case was a well-known Hermeticist and Rosicrucian from the early 20th century.

His mother was a music teacher and Paul early in life was directed in that direction and indeed he was very talented musician. His father was a head of a library, so Paul was from his early days associated with many books too. He was especially interested in mystical books and had early records of mystical experiences.

Lee Moffitt explains his turning point in the “Paul Foster Case Timeline” brochure:

“1909-10- Case was approached on the streets of Chicago by a stranger who called him by name, and revealed Case’s “most secret thoughts, hopes, and activities”. The stranger told Case he came from the Master of Wisdom who was the teacher of them both. Case was at a crossroads. He could either continue with his musical career and have a life of relative ease and comfort, or dedicate himself to fully serve humanity and play a vital part in its evolution for this coming Aquarian Age. He was told that road would be hard, with much trials and sorrow. From that moment on, although Case went on to become an orchestral conductor, every spare moment went into his dedicated service.”

It is suspected that he is one of the authors of today well known book on modern hermetic “Kybalion”.  The occult order of B.O.T.A. today still exist and it is well known through the occult circles.
He was a teacher, a lecturer, writer and experimenter in many occult and mystical exercises, especially experimentation in relation with meditation and sound.

Let’s look at his chart.

We can see that Pars Hyleg is at 3 degrees Gemini, in the 7th house. Ruler Mercury is on MC in its own sign and regards the part. So, from this first examination we can conclude that the purpose of this native is something related to speaking (Mercury and Gemini), also something related with sharing information (Gemini is centrifugal sign, spreading information in the environment).
He would take this as a career (Mercury on MC).

Furthermore, Saturn is co-present with the part in same sign; he will add some color into it.
Saturn is associate with discipline and hard work. In relation to Mercury would give a deep thinker and disciplined mind (Mercury from his own side, gives perfect reception to Saturn, in application).

But we cannot always and easily and naively judge the nativity by looking at one segment only, we must examine some other factors too. Looking at the ruler of his ascendant – Jupiter In 9th alongside Venus (the two benefics in 9th!) we can judge that the primary motivation, the quest for happiness in his life, he would seek in religion, spirituality, occult sciences (his special affinity was to Tarot, and was fascinated by Astrology too).

Abu Ali says that Jupiter in 9th gives:

“Good faith, true dreams and truthful interpretation of them”.

For Venus:

“Pleasure and good fortune through travel, religion, fear of God, true dreams and truthful interpretation of them”.
(Abu Ali – The Judgments of Nativities, Holden trans., p.73)

But the ruler of the pars hyleg – Mercury, has rulership in the 9th division by the virtue of Virgo having part of that division itself.

Moon in Pisces would give mystical blend to the whole character.

Sun as Light of the Sect being angular in masculine sign, and having some good spear-bearers would give distinguished nativity. Mercury angular configured with MC in its own sign and exaltation, being a morning star, is highly powerful Mercury. This Mercury also get out of the Sun’s beams (made an appearance) in 7 days prior the birth, distinguishing itself even more. Jupiter in its own triplicity and Saturn too, in trigonal relationship with Sun, direct in motion gives good spear-bearers too.

We can conclude that this nativity will be distinguished (deep) thinker, orator, and writer in the religious, spiritual, and mystical fields.

Conclusion:

Pars Hyleg can be very valuable and useful tool for delineating native’s purpose in life. I hope that I was able to show you my approach in using it in the 2 nativities above. The holistic approach to the chart is needed. The whole chart operates as a whole and the parts are only parts of the whole. So, one must look at the big picture in every instance and to compare the parts with that big picture.
